What I’m trying to convey to you people may sound vague/absurd at the moment. After giving a lot of fodder to my thoughts, I've transcribed them into words. Hope you support me in this cause. I’m not asking anything which is beyond your capacity to do. It’s just that I care about certain things and I expect the same from others. It’s time we rolled up our sleeves & put the “GRAND PLAN” in motion.

BACKGROUND: This idea occurred to me on my previous birthday, I had prepared a “TO DO” list on the D-Day. One of them is planting a small sapling with my own hands. I planted it & raised the sapling all by myself, near my room. I used to water it regularly. Kept a constant watch over it in fear of someone’s stupid bike running over the poor thing as it was planted near the Parking Area (Unofficial) of Netravati Boys Hostel, SDMCET. I tended it for a month or two. After that a gardener was appointed by the hostel authorities. That was a breather, along with other plants my little sapling was taken care of.

Now it’s almost over a year I saw the plant, I only hope its still breathing. That small thing has sparked a tiny hope & triggered a thought why not try this on large numbers?

I’m a nature lover, and I've always believed that nature works wonders in its own mystical ways. It’s got a procedure to heal itself to the damage. But we have damaged it to the extent irreparable. But if we take one step at a time, I’m sure we can cajole her back the way she was. PERFECT & BALANCED! It’s time we acted a little responsibly & play our pivotal roles (It may seem silly now) to heal the wounds of MOTHER EARTH. Consider it a TRIBUTE to her because she’s kept us alive, fulfilling all the growing & insatiable necessities which are never gonna dwindle.

THE STATS:
   INDIA

POPULATION:  124 CRORES* (2011 CENSUS)

PEOPLE LIVING BELOW POVERTY LINE: 31 CRORES* (ROUGH ESTIMATE, NEARLY CORRECT!)

SUPER RICH: 6.2 CRORES* (5 % of the total population. I made an Assumption)

BELOW 14 YRS: 40 CRORES* (AS PER THE DATA)

APPROXIMATELY 60% of the population goes out of the equation.

The rest 40% population is “WE THE PEOPLE”, the YOUTH, we make up roughly around 50 CRORE. We fall in the responsible middle category, which constitute majority of the populace.

Our names surely aren't getting into any History textbooks. But I feel we certainly can be a part of creating History guys. “One should believe in making rather than reading History.”

I've been hearing the term “GO GREEN” quite common lately. But the real question is ARE WE GOING?

A staged protest with Placards & Theme Shirts with all the ranting about being “ECO-FRIENDLY” on the road while the media is catching us doesn't show or prove anything for the cause. If you are really willing or committed then get your hands muddy. Prove it to yourself that you are committed. The only person you can’t lie to…. Is YOURSELF!

My elaborate scheme is simple (It may sound silly). Spend thinking about this for about 10-15 minutes, you’ll definitely get the “GIST” of what I’m trying to make you guys understand. All you got to do is a few

SIMPLE THINGS UNDONE:

1)  Whenever you celebrate your birthday, remember you are also getting a year younger (to live) on this earth. I want each of you to plant at least ‘ONE TREE’ with your own hands in this lifetime.

2)  Whenever you take your food, look at the plants. Thank “MOTHER EARTH’ for the produce she has given, THE HARVEST. Every grain you eat take months to sprout & take liters of water. You can’t afford to waste a single grain just because it doesn't taste good. Remember there are millions who can’t afford even that.(e.g. SOMALIA, ETHIOPIA & SOME POOR AFRICAN NATIONS) They have to be content with just a single meal a day that too, if they’re lucky. Think before wasting a single grain. Before it gets into your plate, make sure you can digest it fully or else don’t dare take it.

3)  Just like you need Food & Air to survive. Plants need Water, It has plenty of air to meet the necessity (But we’re choking plants with polluting AIR). Usually plant needs to be watered just once, remember to water them at least once. When your body craves twice or thrice (or more than that in the case of few of you) for its attention in a day, please look at the plants. ONCE IS JUST ENOUGH!

4)  Gift a sapling/Plant to your loved ones on their special day. But only if you’re satisfied you’re doing the right thing. Else you can move on with the grand thing just like other people gift something costly which CATCHES the eyes for sometime & later loses its value. But if you try doing this once, you would be showing your love not for one but two people, isn't that beautiful?

5)  If you've planted a SAPLING/PLANT, then half your job is done. The next thing you got to do is make sure the chain continues. Support your FRIEND/SISTER/BROTHER/FAMILY to grow at least one in their lifetime.

6)  Assuming 20, 00,000 of those 50 CRORE responsible youth have their birthday every day. Assuming 999 people don’t give a heed of whatever message I tried to convey, I still have 2000 trees/day.

NOW WHERE’S THE PROBLEM?

WHERE IS THE CONCERN OF GLOBAL WARMING?

WHEREVER IT IS HIDING PLEASE ASK IT TO FACE INDIA.

FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE LIVING IN METROS, IN DENSELY POPULATED CITIES, THAT’S NOT AN EXCUSE. WATER PROBLEM IS NOT AN EXCUSE! IF YOU GO THROUGH MY ARTICLE CORRECTLY I SAY “IN A LIFETIME”, I’M SURE YOU’LL GET TO DO THIS FAVOR FOR YOURSELF & OTHERS IN THIS LIFETIME, WHICH REQUIRES NO APPRECIATION, IT’S A SOCIAL-MORAL RESPONSIBILITY.

AFTER DECADES………. THIS IS A HISTORY GUYS! I’M SURE WHEN YOU LOOK BACK; YOU’LL SURELY FEEL PROUD FOR HAVING DONE THIS SILLY THING SERIOUSLY. I CHALLENGE YOU; EVERY ONE WILL STOP PATTING YOUR BACK BECAUSE THEY ARE READY WITH THEIR OWN SAPLINGS, SHOVEL & BUCKET IN THEIR YARD. IF YOU WANT THE PEOPLE TO CHANGE, YOU BE THE CHANGE.

NOW: GO GREEN!
AFTER 5 YEARS: GOING GREEN!
AFTER 10 YEARS: GONE GREEN!

PLEASE SUPPORT ME IN THIS. A WAR CAN NEVER BE FOUGHT ALONE, I NEED MORE SOLDIERS! I WILL MAKE SURE, NO ONE’S WOUNDED! DON'T JUST READ AND DUMP THIS ARTICLE!

P.S:

1) I DIDN'T COUNT IN THE PEOPLE BELOW POVERTY LINE, AS THEY ARE THE PEOPLE WITH PROBLEMS ALREADY, THEY COULDN'T HAVE POSSIBLY CREATED THE PROBLEM WHICH NEEDS TO BE SOLVED.

2) I DIDN'T INCLUDE THE SUPER RICH: THEY WOULD RATHER REMAIN IN THE SPOTLIGHT GIVING CHARITY OR FULFILLING THEIR OWN NEVER ENDING “TO BUY” LIST. THEY WOULDN'T WANT TO GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY.

3) I DIDN'T INCLUDE THE KIDS BELOW 14 YRS OF AGE. THE REASON IS SIMPLE. WHAT WE ARE DOING IS FOR THEM & THEY WILL SOON FOLLOW US. THE CHAIN CONTINUES UNBROKEN…

4) CONSIDER DOING IT SERIOUSLY ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME. TRY TO BE A “MOTHER”, YOU WILL KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS.

* THE DATA OF POPULATION IS NOT PERFECT; IT’S ROUNDED TO GET THE FIGURES IN UNDERSTANDABLE TERMS. BUT IT’S ALMOST APPROPRIATE.

NO PART WHATSOEVER IN THIS ARTICLE IS OFFENSIVE. IT’S A VIEWPOINT, OF WHAT LITTLE EVERY INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION IS GOING TO MATTER BIG IN THE LONG RUN.

  1. Owning a sapling is not the challenge and neither is taking care of it. It’s fine if you have a courtyard adjoining your home, but for people like us who live in boxes stacked upon one another, it’s impossible to imagine nurturing any sapling that can grow into a tree larger than the size of our house!
A problem which I’d like to point to (no criticism involved in this) is that, you have not taken into account the lack of soil to plant the "Tree" in once it reaches a certain age. Just planting it near home would require digging up concrete and cement and finding that the soil beneath is completely hostile towards my Plant (Bear in mind I’m not talking about a Plant that has reached self-sustaining stage).
In the end I’m forced to plant it in the nearest stretch on un-inhabited land, (Which is usually a plot awaiting its owners to start construction in) a few kilometers away from home. So in the end I have to travel a few kilometers every day to check up on my Plant. This sure is a noble thought but you must realize that it is fruitless, there is a good chance that I’ll have to move my plant when the owner turns up with a construction crew.
You’ll be glad, however, to know that we are trying our best to accomplish your goal in a very small way - by growing a Betel leaf plant in a tiny verandah adjoining our home. The little plant’s a drunkard, drinks up all the water we throw its way. We did once have a huge courtyard in which we grew a lot of stuff (Many of which I don't know). That was in Shimoga, the land of eternal spring. Happier times, everyone like returning to a place that reminds you of the Garden of Eden…
